Stray Animals vs Pet Animals: The Growing Conflict in Cities
In the past few years, a number of conflicts between individuals over stray animals and pet animals has increased in urban areas. What was once a minor issue has now become a point for debate in housing societies, on the streets, etc. According to experts, rather than converting this into a conflict, a balance needs to be maintained between humans and animals so that they can live peacefully.

Due to rapid urbanization, there has been a decrease in open spaces and a corresponding increase in waste management issues. This has a direct impact on the natural habitat of animals. Hence, stray dogs and cats are often seen in residential complexes, markets, etc.

Some people may be feeding stray animals out of compassion for them. Others may be concerned about safety, hygiene, and noise levels. According to animal welfare experts, if stray animals are fed properly, vaccinated, and sterilized, they are less aggressive. Hence, several municipal bodies have come forward in support of sterilization drives for controlling stray animals.

On the flip side, the number of pets owned by individuals living in cities has risen substantially. This means that many individuals now treat dogs and cats as part of their family, thereby creating a culture of pet ownership within the city. However, with the culture, there are responsibilities that come with it.

For instance, individuals with pets are expected to ensure that their pets are vaccinated, trained, and under control within the city. The issue of cleanliness, as well as the rights of neighbors who do not own pets, is essential. Conflicts arise when individuals feel that the rules are not being followed, or when the treatment of pets is unfair.

According to experts, the increasing conflict between stray animal feeders, pet owners, and others is primarily due to a lack of awareness or communication between them. In a densely populated city, there is a shortage of space for all individuals to be comfortable in their own way.

The fear of dog bites, concerns for children's safety, or a lack of knowledge about animal welfare laws often results in conflicts between them. In most instances, people are unaware that animal cruelty is a punishable offence by law. At the same time, disturbing others or creating a nuisance for them also leads to conflicts between these groups.

The need for co-existence, not confrontation

Animal welfare organizations and civic bodies alike believe that the key is not to rid the city of animals altogether. A responsible management of the situation is necessary for resolving most issues.

In addition to sterilization drives, vaccination programs, and proper waste management systems, raising awareness among all parties concerned is essential for creating a harmonious co-existence.
