Are Pets Changing The Idea of “Family” In Modern India?
In urban India, the concept of “family” is undergoing a subtle transformation. What used to mean parents, children, grandparents, and the rest of the family living under the same roof now increasingly means paws, whiskers, and wagging tails too. From the metro cities of Mumbai and Bengaluru to smaller urban centers, pets are no longer considered mere guardians of the house.
Instead, they are increasingly being brought home as sons, daughters, and siblings. But how temporary, emotional, or permanent is this change?

The rise of “pet parents”

The terms used to define pet owners too have undergone a transformation. Instead of using the word “dog owner” to define themselves, people now prefer to call themselves “dog mom” or “cat dad.” Social media profiles now contain the phrase “full-time pawrent.” Pets’ birthdays are celebrated with special cakes, photo shoots, and even pet vacations.

This shift in emotions, however, is a sign of something much deeper: companionship is being prioritised over structure. Today, because of increasing work pressures, delayed marriages, low family sizes, and migration to big cities, young people are developing deep emotional relationships with animals. For young people, pets are not additions to the family; they are the family.

Nuclear families and urban loneliness

Indian families are undergoing a significant change in terms of their size. Joint families are a rarity, and in cities, a very rare sighting indeed. In this relative quiet of family life, pets are filling a vacuum.

A pet welcomes you home after a long day of work, listens to what you have to say, and does not expect any of the milestones in life, such as a family of its own, to be met. In cities, people live away from their parents and other family members, and in this loneliness, pets are filling a gap.

In a way, pets are changing the very definition of family from a biological family to a family of emotions.

A generational shift

Interestingly, the same parents who previously said, “Pets are too much responsibility” now proudly share pictures of their “Grand Dog” or “Grand Cat.” What was previously considered too impractical to consider is now considered acceptable.

This represents a shift within society. Family, previously considered a responsibility-oriented construct, is now shifting towards a choice-oriented construct. Family represents care, responsibility, and unconditional love. Pets embody all these attributes.
