How to Protect Your Dog From The Heat Wave

When a heatwave hits, we’re the first ones to crank up the AC and reach for an iced coffee. But for our dogs, "beating the heat" is a lot more complicated. They don’t have the luxury of sweating through their skin like we do—they’re basically wearing a fur coat in a sauna, relying on just their paw pads and panting to keep from overheating. If you want to keep your pup safe when the mercury rises, you have to think like a dog. Here is a human-to-human guide on navigating a heatwave with your best friend.

If you want to keep your pup safe when the mercury rises, you have to think like a dog. Here is a human-to-human guide on navigating a heatwave with your best friend.

1. Respect the "7-Second Rule"

Before you head out for a walk, do the pavement test. Place the back of your hand on the asphalt for seven seconds. If it’s too hot for you to hold it there, it’s definitely too hot for your dog’s paws.

Pavements and sand can reach temperatures that literally cook skin and paw pads. During a heatwave, your walking schedule should shift entirely. If you aren't out before 8:00 AM or after the sun goes down, you’re better off skipping the walk altogether. A missed walk is better than a trip to the vet for burnt paws.

2. Hydration is a Game

A bowl of water is the bare minimum. When it’s 40°C outside, water in a bowl gets warm and unappealing fast.

The Ice Trick: Drop a few ice cubes in their water dish. Most dogs love the "clink" sound and will bob for the cubes, staying hydrated while they play.

Pupsicles: Freeze some low-sodium chicken broth or watermelon (seedless!) in an ice tray. It’s the dog version of a Rocket Pop.

Multiple Stations: Put water bowls in every room they frequent. If they’re too lazy to move from the cool kitchen tiles to their water dish in the living room, they’ll just sit there and dehydrate.

3. Ditch the "Wet Towel" Myth

A common mistake people make is soaking a towel and draping it over their dog’s back. While it feels cool for a second, that towel quickly warms up and acts like an insulator, trapping the heat against their body.

Instead, let them lie on a damp towel or a cooling mat. If you need to cool them down fast, focus on their "hot spots": their paws, their belly, and their groin area. Misting them with a spray bottle is also great—as the water evaporates, it mimics the cooling effect of human sweat.

4. Know the Signs (Before It’s an Emergency)

Heatstroke doesn't happen all at once; it builds. You need to watch for the "Red Zone" signs:

Excessive, frantic panting: If they can't seem to catch their breath even in the shade.

Bright red or purple gums: This is a sign their body is struggling to move blood.

The "Drunken" Walk: If your dog looks wobbly, confused, or lethargic, their brain is already feeling the heat.

The Golden Rule: If you suspect heatstroke, cool first, transport second. Move them to the shade, douse them in lukewarm (not ice-cold) water, and get a fan on them before rushing to the car.

5. Creative Enrichment

If it’s too hot to go outside, your dog is going to get bored—and bored dogs get destructive. Move your "walk" indoors. Use a "snuffle mat" or hide treats around the house to keep their brain busy without raising their body temperature. This is the perfect time to practice those "stay" and "sit" commands in the comfort of the AC.

At the end of the day, if you’re uncomfortable, they’re miserable. Keep the curtains drawn to block out the sun, keep the fans moving, and never, ever leave them in a car—not even for "just a minute" with the windows cracked. On a 30°C day, a car interior can hit 40°C in less than ten minutes.
