Bulldogs, though beloved for their affectionate nature and iconic appearance, typically live shorter lives averaging 8 to 10 years due to a combination of genetic and structural health issues. Their flat faces cause severe breathing problems, their heavy build leads to joint stress and their skin folds are prone to infections. Selective breeding for looks over health has compounded these issues, making bulldogs vulnerable from birth.
Bulldogs are cute and strong creatures with wrinkled faces and loving nature. They are really popular pets all over the world but unfortunately bulldogs have a shorter lifespan than many other dogs. They live up to 8 to 10 years while other breeds may live longer.
Bulldogs face health problems that affect their lifespan. Their special body shape and breeding history both a big in their short lifespan.
Bulldogs were for strong looks and muscles not for health. This breeding made them prone to many health issues that are hard to fix. These problems start from birth and get worse as the dog grows older.

One of the biggest reasons bulldogs live shorter lives is their breathing problem. Bulldogs have short noses and flat faces which make them part of the brachycephalic breed because of which their airways are small and narrow. This makes it hard for them to breathe especially in hot weather or after playing.
Owners see their bulldog panting heavily or snoring loudly. These may seem normal but they are signs the dog's body is struggling for air. In extreme cases, bulldogs faint or collapse because their body does not enough oxygen. Breathing surgeries help some bulldogs but they are costly and risky.

Joint and Bone Problems

Bulldogs have a bulky body and short legs but this body type puts extra stress on their quality of life. When bulldogs suffer from hip dysplasia and arthritis. These conditions make it hard for them to walk, run or stand as they age.
Their heavy body and short legs cause joint pain which lowers their quality. When bulldogs do not move, they tend to gain more weight which makes their pain worse.

Bulldogs have beautiful folds on their faces, necks and legs. While these wrinkles make look adorable, they also trap moisture and dirty. This causes skin infections and allergies if owners do not clean them properly.
Bulldogs have suffer from itchy, red skin or bad odors because of bacteria growing in their folds. Skin infection spread fast and make them uncomfortable.

Breeding and Genetic health Risks

Bulldogs face genetic problems because of how they were bred. Breeders focused on the bulldogs looks instead of their health. This caused inherited problems like heart disease, breathing disorders and weak immunity. These health issues pass from one generation to another.
Because of their body shape, bulldogs also struggles with natural birth. Most puppies are born through surgery known as a C-section. This puts both the mother and puppies at risk and shows how this health issues run deep in the breed.
