Rabies kills tens of thousands of people in India every year, and the dog at the centre of most exposures is often a pet, not a stray. If your dog lives inside a flat and never roams, that still does not close every route to the virus. Here is what rabies actually does, why the vaccine is non-negotiable, and what the schedule looks like for a dog in India.

India accounts for roughly a third of all rabies deaths worldwide. The virus is present in the environment in a way that makes it unlike most other diseases a pet owner thinks about, it does not require a dog to live on the street, eat garbage, or fight other animals to be at risk. One unlicensed bite from a visiting animal, one gap in a window grille, one off-leash moment in a park lift lobby: that is the exposure window. The vaccine does not just protect your dog. It sits at the centre of a chain that protects everyone in the flat.

What rabies does in the body

Rabies is caused by a lyssavirus that travels along nerve fibres rather than through the bloodstream. After a bite, the virus replicates at the wound site, then moves toward the spinal cord and brain at a rate of roughly 12 to 24 millimetres per day along the nerve. This is why a bite on the face or neck is more urgent than one on a foot, the distance to the brain is shorter. Once the virus reaches the brain, it causes acute encephalitis. In dogs, early signs include a change in temperament, restlessness, and sensitivity to light and sound. The disease progresses to the paralytic or furious forms most people recognise, and after neurological signs appear, survival is essentially zero in an unvaccinated animal. There is no treatment at that stage. The same is true in humans. Post-exposure prophylaxis, the injections given after a bite, works only because it races the virus to the immune system before the virus reaches the brain. Once symptoms appear in a person, the outcome is almost always fatal. This is the biological reason the vaccine is not optional.

Why an indoor dog is not automatically safe

The assumption behind skipping the vaccine is that an indoor dog has no contact with unvaccinated animals. That assumption has more gaps than most owners account for. Dogs in Indian cities go downstairs for walks, share lift buttons and lobby floors with other animals, and occasionally meet dogs whose vaccination history is unknown. Bats, which are a reservoir species for lyssaviruses, enter flats through open windows and ventilation gaps more often than owners realise, a bat bite is small enough to miss on a dog's coat. A visiting relative's dog, a stray that slips into a stairwell, a dog-boarding stay: each is a contact event. The virus does not announce itself. An animal can shed it in saliva before showing any signs of illness. None of this requires your dog to be a street animal. It requires one uncontrolled moment.

The vaccination schedule in India

Puppies receive their first rabies vaccine at 12 to 16 weeks of age, depending on the protocol the vet uses and the vaccine available. A booster follows one year after the initial dose. After that, the standard recommendation from veterinary bodies including the World Small Animal Veterinary Association is a booster every one to three years, depending on the vaccine type, killed adjuvanted vaccines are typically annual, while certain recombinant vaccines carry a three-year label. Your vet will tell you which applies to the product used at your clinic. In India, the Animal Birth Control and Immunisation programme targets street dogs, but that programme does not cover pet dogs, that is the owner's responsibility. The Veterinary Council of India and municipal corporation guidelines in most cities list rabies vaccination as a legal requirement for registered pet dogs, not just a recommendation. Keeping the certificate current also matters practically: if your dog bites someone, an up-to-date rabies certificate affects how the incident is handled by local authorities.

What to do after a potential exposure

If your dog is bitten by an unknown animal, or if you are bitten or scratched by your dog and the dog's vaccination is not current, the steps are the same: reach a vet or a doctor the same day. Do not wait to see whether symptoms develop. Wash the wound with soap and running water for at least fifteen minutes, this mechanical cleaning reduces viral load at the site and is the one first-response step with clear evidence behind it. Do not apply chilli, turmeric, or any home remedy to the wound. Do not attempt to treat a suspected rabies exposure at home beyond washing and getting to a clinic. For your dog, the vet will assess the wound, advise on observation or booster dosing based on current vaccination status, and guide next steps. For a person bitten by a dog whose vaccination status is unknown or lapsed, post-exposure prophylaxis from a doctor is the only option with a proven outcome. Time matters more than anything else in this situation.

One vaccine, two kinds of protection

A vaccinated dog cannot serve as a bridge between a rabid animal and the people in the flat. That is the practical logic behind the phrase herd immunity as it applies to pet vaccination, when enough animals in a population are covered, the virus has fewer hosts to move through. In a city like Delhi or Mumbai, where pet dogs and street dogs share the same pavements and parks, a vaccinated pet is a small but real break in the transmission chain. The vaccine costs a few hundred rupees and takes a minute. The disease it prevents has no treatment once it progresses. Those two facts belong in the same sentence.
