In this article, we talk about pug dogs and their unique way of communication, the unusual sounds they produce due to their anatomy, this article covers the snorts, grunts, sneezing, whines, whimpers and growls. The needs behind those sounds, when things are normal and when to be concerned.
“Pugs”, a dog breed which is charming, loving, playful and intuitive to their human needs. Their big eyes and small frame makes them endearing to all. But there is one another thing that makes them unique and that is the sound they create, which might be odd and unusual to an outsider but is normal for the breed and to the owner. These sounds occur due to their brachycephalic anatomy (short snouted facial structure), which causes narrowed nostrils and windpipes that results in restricted airflow with elongated soft palates that vibrates when they breathe causing snorts, snores and honks sound. Well here are 7 sounds that pugs make:
1 Snorts/Snuffles
Sounds like (“snrkk-snrk” or “huff-huff”), short pig like.
This is their normal breathing caused due to a vibrating soft palate as air makes its way creating noisy bursts. These sounds can occur when they sniff, get excited or simply just breathe. Owning a pug dog can make the owner understand the tone of the snort and the activity they are doing.
2 Grunts/Oinks
Sounds like (“Urk-Urk” or “Oink-Oink”)
These are the sounds of happiness or contentment in pugs but it can also mean attention seeking. These sounds are the sounds of playful mood while exploring, relaxing or walking. This can occur during belly rubs, anticipating food, going on a walk, etc.
3 Snoring
These are normal voices they make while sleeping but can occur when they are awake too as it happens due to their narrow, small nostrils and throat shape. Their snoring may sound like humans. But one should be concerned and should consult a vet if the snoring is suddenly very loud and chronic or other symptoms like wheezing or gasping for air occurs.
4 Reverse sneezing
Sounds like (“Honk-honk-snort”)
This is the sudden sound of inhaled sneeze caused due spasm of the soft palate, triggered by irritants like dust and nasal mucus shift or throat irritation by pulling on leash or sudden increased breathing due to excitement. It may look scary but usually harmless and passes quickly.
5 Wheezing
Sounds like(“Whee-zee”-”Whee-ze”)
This is the high pitched whistle like sound ,feels like breathing from a straw, again it happens due to their narrow airways. This sound isn't entirely normal if happens frequently and with intensity (one should consult a vet) but occasionally its normal, after a play or excitement.
6 Whines/Whimpers
Sounds like(“weeehnn”-”eeehnn”) and (“mmrhh”-”yip-yip”)
These sounds appears in all dog breeds but in pugs they are a bit different because of their anatomy, sounding almost cartoonish. Whining sound in pug dogs is a bit muffled, sounding squeaky like a baby cry asking for attention or food and whimpers appearing like a high cry often breathy and shorter during distress or a plea.
7 Play growls
Sounds like(“grr”)
These sounds are also common in every dog but in pugs it is a bit shorter and broken up because of restricted airflow almost sounding congested. In pugs growls are funny than scary. It occurs when they are playful, excited, chasing, chewing a toy.
Pugs are cute, short , big eyed bundle of joy with unusual voice of communication. It is all normal, but one should be concerned if they are wheezing constant, having labored breath or choking during sleep. Consult a vet in case they experience any of it.
