The Tamil Nadu Government has decided to build pet parks in the cities of Chennai and Coimbatore to encourage pet ownership and provide a more conducive environment for animal care and handling. The exercise will be done with the help of private organizations.

To implement the project, the government of India has invited applications from charitable trusts and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), who had earlier experience of the same. The selected organisation will use its own funds to develop and maintain the park.

Pet parks will be created within the proposed areas, which will have a green space for pets to play, play equipment for the pets, as well as training areas for the owners to train their pets correctly. In addition to this, it will be possible for shops to be opened within the premises for the sale of pet foods, among other pet-related products. A rule book will be provided for the correct and kind treatment of animals.

Officials say that not only will such specific areas be helpful in ensuring the creation of a safe and recreational spot for pets, there will also be an opportunity to spread the word on "pet parenting" among the general public.

Interested organisations can download the application form and comprehensive guidelines from the official website of the Tamil Nadu Animal Welfare Board. The completed applications have to be submitted on or before 26th of this month. Authorities have welcomed experienced groups to apply and help construct pet-friendly public spaces in the state.
