Meet the Kakapo, the world’s heaviest parrot that cannot fly
It may sound strange, but there exists a flying bird which cannot fly. The kakapo, a rare species of bird found only in New Zealand, is known to be the heaviest parrot in the world. This species of bird is one of the few species of parrots which have completely lost the power of flying. This rare species of bird evolved thousands of years ago in a manner which made flying completely unnecessary. However, this proved to be a curse for this species of bird.
A Parrot like no Other
The Kakapo Parrot is like no other Parrot. While Parrots are known to be colorful birds which can fly, this Parrot lives on the ground and is active at night. This Parrot can weigh as much as four kilograms, making it the heaviest Parrot in the world. This Parrot has strong legs and a heavy body, which makes it walk instead of flying.
The reason for this unique characteristic is associated with evolution. There were very few predators on land in New Zealand that preyed on birds. As a result, the kakapo bird did not need to use its flying ability to evade predators. Over time, the bird became heavier and its flying ability weakened until it completely lost its flying capacity.
How the bird moves without flying
Although the kakapo bird has lost its flying ability, it still manages to move around quite well. The bird can move long distances on foot using its powerful legs. The bird can also climb trees when need be. When descending from higher locations, the bird uses its wings for balancing rather than flying. As a result of its movements, the bird has been described as a small mammal rather than a bird.
The lifestyle of the kakapo was good until the advent of humans in New Zealand. When humans came, they brought animals such as cats, rats, and stoats with them. These animals became a threat to the bird. The kakapo was unable to fly and escape from the predators. This led to a decline in the population of the kakapos.
Efforts to protect the kakapo
Conservation efforts are being put in place to save the kakapo from extinction. The experts have relocated many of the kakapos to islands that do not have predators. Scientists have been keeping an eye on the breeding process so that the population increases. With the help of technology, the movement of the kakapos can be tracked and protected.
The population of the kakapos has become stable due to the efforts put in place for their conservation. The kakapo is still an endangered species and needs to be protected.
