According to a fascinating study from Kyoto University, female dogs are better at judging human competence than males; they observe our accomplishments and shortcomings to determine whether we are worthy of being followed. It's an evolutionary trait for identifying trustworthy food sources and protectors, not for giving someone a sardonic side eye.
Highlights
Females gazed longer at competent humans and chose them 83% of the time for rewards.
Males notice incompetence but don't act on it, showing equal interest regardless.
Broader traits: Females excel in eye contact emotion reading, and obedience training.

The Core Experiment Design
3-judge SC bench to hear afresh issue of stray dogs in Delhi-NCR
32 dogs 16 females and 16 males observed two actors attempt to open identical clear containers containing treats in a 2022 Kyoto University study that was published in Scientific Reports. While the incompetent actor fumbled for more than five seconds without success, the competent actor did so with ease in two seconds. Following demonstrations, dogs had to select one of the actors to get to a fresh container full of rewards. This configuration examined whether dogs can infer future dependability based on performance observations.

Yes. Studies suggest female dogs are more observant of human behavior than male dogs, which can make them seem more judgmental though personality and training also matter. - What is the IQ of a dog female?
There is no separate IQ for female dogs. A dog’s intelligence is about equal to a 2-year-old human. - How long does 1 hour feel to a dog?
For a dog, 1 hour can feel much longer because they sense time by routine and smell, not clocks. - How do dogs know it's bedtime?
Dogs know it’s bedtime by daily routine, light changes, and their internal body clock. - Can dogs tell time by smell?
Yes. Dogs can sense time by changes in scent strength, which fade predictably over time.
