Meet Harper: A Rescued Australian Shepherd Who Found Her Lost Spark and Forever Home After 6 Months Of Training
Emotional trauma can break a dog in ways one can hardly put into words. 6 months ago, when Harper, the Australian Shepered was rescued in Florida, she was oversensitive, used to get scared by the slightest noise, sight, or person. Thankfully, with a dedicated customized training plan, today Harper has covered the distance from ‘stuck in survival mode’ to a properly functioning and thriving dog.
Harper’s journey of recovery
According to people, Harper was brought to Alaqua Animal Refuge in Florida. The animal care manager of the shelter, Aubrey Maurer, told the outlet that the transition for any dog is challenging. “For Harper, overcoming her own anxiety in a new environment was a lot to take on. She is a small dog in a big world, and that can greatly affect anyone's ability to feel at ease,” Aubrey added.
Every dog is different, and so is their trauma. A behavioural training is customized in a way that it helps the canines best. However, creating such a program becomes hard when the background is unknown.
“When a dog's past is an unknown, it's even more important to listen instead of rushing to label or correct. Many of these dogs aren't misbehaving. They're protecting themselves. Emotional recovery gives them the space to feel safe enough to show us who they really are. Once that trust is built, everything else follows," said Laurie Hood, Alaqua's founder and president.
In Harper’s case, building trust was the key. The team also made sure to go slow and steady and focused on socialization. According to Laurie, socialization isn’t just about meeting new people or dogs; it can also refer to “exposure to new environments and stimuli.”
“Establishing a bond with her on an individual level as the handler allowed Harper to begin to trust new things. We were able to build on this with slow exposure to new people and new environments, making these interactions a positive experience," she added.
Harper’s adoption
After 6 months of training and patience, Harper didn’t just find her lost confidence, but emerged as a new dog altogether. It was now time to find her an ideal home, a loving environment, in short, her happily ever after. Unfortunately, her last three foster homes couldn't do the charm, but so far the fourth home seems like her forever abode.
Speaking about her adoption, Maurer said, "When Harper's adopter first met Harper, she immediately fell in love, but had an understanding of what it would take to win Harper over. The adopter's dedication and patience, combined with a knowledge of quirky dog behavior, were what made us realize that this would be the perfect home for Harper.”
