Beyond tail wags and purrs: The little ways dogs, cats, and fish show that they trust you

Trust is not always loud. Sometimes, it comes in the quietest moments, a dog sleeping peacefully beside you, a cat slowly blinking at you from across the room, or a fish swimming closer when you approach the tank. Pets may not be able to say “I trust you” in words, but they have many small ways of showing it. Once you learn to notice these signs, you may realise that your pet is communicating with you more than you think.

Dogs are naturally alert animals. So, when your dog lies down and falls into a deep, relaxed sleep around you, it can be a sign that they feel safe. You may also notice your dog choosing to sleep near your feet, beside your bed, or even leaning against you. These small choices show that your presence makes them feel comfortable. A dog that trusts you may also expose its belly while lying down. While this can sometimes simply mean your dog wants a belly rub, a relaxed body and loose posture can show that they feel safe enough to let their guard down.

Does your dog bring you a favourite ball, toy, or even a slightly damaged stuffed animal? It may be more than an invitation to play. Dogs often use toys to interact with people they feel comfortable around. Bringing you something they value can be a way of seeking attention, starting a game, or simply sharing an activity with you. Even if you have seen the same toy a hundred times, your dog may be using it to say, “I want to spend time with you.”

Cats have their own quiet language, and the slow blink is one of the sweetest signs. If your cat looks at you and slowly closes and opens its eyes, it may be showing that it feels relaxed around you. You can even slowly blink back. A trusting cat may also sit with its back toward you, stretch out comfortably in your presence, or choose to sleep near you. These behaviours can show that your cat does not feel the need to stay constantly alert when you are around.

Cats can be independent, but that does not mean they do not form strong bonds with people. A cat that feels safe may groom itself while sitting near you, knead its paws on a blanket beside you, or curl up in a relaxed position. Some cats may also follow their favourite person from one room to another. They may not want to be held or cuddled all the time, but simply choosing to stay close can be their way of showing affection. Remember, every cat is different. A cat that does not enjoy being picked up is not necessarily a cat that does not trust you.

Fish may seem very different from dogs and cats, but they can also learn to recognise patterns and respond to the person who cares for them. If your fish regularly swims toward the front of the tank when you approach, especially around feeding time, it may have learned to associate you with food and familiar activity. A fish that appears relaxed and active around you can also show that it is comfortable with its surroundings. However, fish behaviour can change because of water quality, tank conditions, stress, or illness, so one behaviour alone should not be treated as proof of trust.

For pets, trust is usually built slowly. Feeding them on time, giving them a safe space, respecting their boundaries, and spending calm time with them can all help create a sense of security. The most important thing is to understand that trust looks different in every animal. A dog may show it by following you everywhere. A cat may show it by quietly sleeping beside you. A fish may simply become more responsive when you come near its tank.

Pets do not always show affection through dramatic gestures. Often, their strongest signs of trust are the small things we almost overlook. The dog that chooses your side of the room, the cat that gives you a slow blink and the fish that swims toward you may all be saying something in their own way. You just have to slow down enough to notice.
